Strange New Worlds S3 Balances Action and Humor
Paramount+ has released the official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. The premiere date of July 17, 2025, was announced during the trailer’s premiere. The season follows up on a very cliffhanger Season 2 finale that found the Enterprise in the middle of a battle with the Gorn and crew members and other survivors being held hostage after the Federation race invades a colony world.
Season 2, which premieres on July 19, 2024, ended with the Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) having to make a difficult decision. He could either follow Starfleet’s direct order to abandon the mission or defy orders to attempt to rescue his crew members and other hostages being held by the Gorn. Not surprisingly, Pike did the noble thing and stayed behind to help. It was left to Season 3 to pick up the pieces and, presumably, for the next battle that was shown in last October’s trailer presented at New York City Comic-Con. The full trailer that was released last month shows the Enterprise and the Gorn ships engaging in a tense and harrowing space battle one more time.
The space battle in the trailer is just a continuation of the one that was started in the season finale. The trailer shows the Enterprise taking damage and at the mercy of the Gorn. It was an exciting tease of more chaos to come when Season 3 premieres next summer, and it lived up to the hype. The rest of the trailer only shows snippets of what is to come, but this ongoing space war with the Gorn will continue in the new season and even reach its end. On the other hand, the new trailer teases a new enemy who will challenge the Enterprise crew in different ways and test their loyalty, courage, and resolve.
In Season 3, the U.S.S. Enterprise will continue to be under the command of Pike, and the captain and crew will continue to face unique threats. But, after seeing the first and only trailer for the season and even from what was teased during last October’s panel at New York City Comic-Con, Season 3 is not going to have only the same type of episodes that fans of Trek are used to watching. The new trailer teases episodes about faith and duty as well as lighter ones with romances, comedy, and mystery.
Paramount+ also promised season three of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will have “shifts in genre the franchise has never seen before.” This was also teased during the April teaser trailer that revealed a few more unique adventures for the crew that hint at more space battles but also at lighter and sillier side stories. The new trailer, on the other hand, further hints at the tonal shifts by showing more friendly camaraderie and a lighter tone when the crew is spending off-duty time in a Holodeck. The Enterprise crew is also shown to still be busy with more space battles, as well as unusual subplots like Spock (Ethan Peck) having to clean up after an unstable member of the science department and his science project.
And, in one part of the trailer, it looks like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be crossing over with the next big Paramount+ Star Trek series that is already in production: Star Trek: Kurtzman’s section of the franchise will also feature James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), Spock’s and Pike’s best friend, who the trailer shows will be serving as captain for one day. In a training simulation, Kirk is being coached by Pike to be an effective leader and, specifically, to make the difficult decisions that a captain has to make. “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with,” Pike is overheard saying in this trailer.
The star-studded cast of returning main and recurring characters will be back in Season 3, including a notable addition. Cillian O’Sullivan is confirmed to be joining the main cast as Dr. Roger Korby, a character that was originally played by Michael Strong in a few episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. In the Strange New Worlds timeline, Korby is a “renowned archaeologist who specializes in medical archaeology.” And, on top of all that, Korby is Chapel’s (Jess Bush) fiancé, who has gone missing for a long time. Korby is found alive and well in Season 3, and is quickly finding that it is not as easy to pick up where he left off with Chapel, who has moved on with her life and even started a relationship with Spock.
The season will also have guest appearances from comedians Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt. The April teaser trailer for Season 3 not only promised a variety of battles but also a variety of genres with hints of funny episodes. The new trailer further cements that fact as it shows the crew of the Enterprise enjoying some time together in a casual setting and having to handle an awkward romantic subplot between two of the characters.
