Jim Wilcox Honored by National Shrine of Saint Thérèse
Jim Wilcox, a longtime resident and devoted Juneau volunteer, has been recognized with the prestigious Saint Thérèse Award. The Advisory Board of the National Shrine of Saint Thérèse officially bestowed the honor upon Wilcox for his lifetime of remarkable stewardship, hospitality, and generous service to the shrine and its pilgrim community.
Lifetime of Dedication and Service
The Saint Thérèse Award is presented to individuals whose lives embody "The Little Way"—a philosophy inspired by the shrine's patroness, emphasizing extraordinary love through ordinary acts. Wilcox's numerous contributions and selfless dedication have left a significant mark on the shrine’s historic and spiritual grounds.
Improving Shrine Infrastructure and Accessibility
Wilcox’s commitment included support for vital updates to the shrine infrastructure. His generosity enabled major improvements, such as the asphalt paving of level pathways to the rosary trail, columbarium, causeway, labyrinth, and the Marian and biblical gardens. These efforts improved accessibility by ensuring wheelchair access throughout the grounds. Additionally, Wilcox resurfaced the main roadway and installed an enhanced chapel access ramp with a safety handrail and solar lighting, further demonstrating his attention to safety and inclusivity.
Personal Stewardship and Pilgrim Hospitality
Joseph Sehnert, executive director of the National Shrine, highlighted Wilcox’s personal involvement in shrine stewardship and hospitality. According to Sehnert, Wilcox diligently studied the shrine’s historical booklets and oral traditions, gaining a deep understanding of its history. He is frequently present on-site, offering a welcoming presence to visitors, greeting pilgrims, answering questions, and sharing stories passed down by the original builders of the Shrine Chapel.
Extending Care Beyond the Shrine
Wilcox’s generosity also extends beyond the shrine’s grounds through a quiet, home-based ministry. He personally fills and packages thousands of holy water and blessed salt sacramentals from his home, providing complimentary gifts for departing pilgrims. This humble act reflects the spirit of Saint Thérèse and offers tangible tokens of comfort to shrine visitors on their journeys.
Sanctuary of Welcome and Reflection
The National Shrine of Saint Thérèse, located at 21425 Glacier Highway, serves as a spiritual sanctuary for individuals from around the world. Known for its natural beauty and historic architecture, the shrine offers a peaceful environment for prayer, reflection, and refuge. Sehnert expressed the shrine’s gratitude, stating, “The National Shrine of Saint Thérèse extends its deepest gratitude to Jim Wilcox for his exceptional piety, care, and love, praying that Saint Thérèse continues to intercede on his behalf.”
