Passenger Growth at Alaska’s Major Airports
Alaska's two largest airports, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and Fairbanks International Airport, are experiencing significant growth in passenger numbers. According to a recent report from the Alaska International Airport System (AIAS), these airports are on track to set a new annual record for total passengers in 2026. The surge comes after an especially busy first half of the year, with over 3.2 million passengers traveling through between January and June—a 7% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
Drivers of Increased Passenger Numbers
The AIAS report attributes the upswing in passenger traffic at Alaska airports to several factors, chief among them new airline service and greater seat capacity. The addition of Southwest Airlines, which began flying to Alaska in the summer of 2026, is seen as a major contributor. Other airlines also introduced new routes to and from Alaska, further increasing travel options and accessibility.
Record-Breaking July and the Peak Travel Season
The peak travel season for Alaska typically runs from May through September. Lex Yelverton, spokesperson for Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, confirmed the trend, noting, "We remain on track to potentially set a new passenger record, but there are still several months left in the year." Notably, July 2026 proved to be the busiest month ever recorded at both Anchorage and Fairbanks airports, with nearly 460,000 passengers passing through during that single month.
Cargo Volumes See Double-Digit Growth
Alaska airports are not just seeing greater passenger numbers—they are also handling a substantially higher volume of cargo. In the first six months of 2026, the volume of cargo moved through Anchorage and Fairbanks airports rose by 11% compared to the previous year. By June, the Anchorage airport had processed nearly two million metric tons of cargo. As one of the busiest cargo airports globally, the Anchorage facility handled over 3.85 million metric tons throughout 2025 and is on pace to match or exceed that performance. Meanwhile, the Fairbanks airport transported nearly three times more cargo in the first half of 2026 than in the same period the previous year.
Focus on Sustained Growth
Looking ahead, airport officials are focused on maintaining this upward trend. "We’re encouraged by the momentum we’re seeing, and our focus going into 2027 is on sustaining it," Yelverton said. With millions of visitors coming to Alaska annually, primarily via cruises, the continued expansion in airline service and airport cargo operations hints at strong economic momentum for the state’s transportation infrastructure.
Impact of Expanded Airline Service and Capacity
The expansion of airline service, notably the entry of Southwest Airlines and the opening of new routes from existing carriers, has played a central role in boosting both passenger numbers and cargo capacity at Alaska’s main airports. Increased seat capacity has made travel to and from Alaska more available during the travel peak season, further supporting the potential to set a new airport record for both passenger and cargo volume by year’s end.
