Alaska Airlines Unveils Major Changes to Atmos Rewards Program

Beginning January 1, 2027, Alaska Airlines will introduce new ways for members of its Atmos Rewards loyalty program to earn points. Travelers will be able to select how they accrue airline points: by distance traveled, ticket price, or the number of eligible flight segments completed. This change is expected to have significant consequences for frequent flyers in Southeast Alaska, where short, regular flights connect communities separated by challenging geography.

New Points-Earning Options Explained

Currently, travelers on short flights such as the 94-mile journey from Juneau to Sitka earn a minimum of 500 points under Alaska Airlines' existing rewards structure. Once the new program launches, that same flight would earn approximately 94 points using the distance-based method, unless members adjust their rewards preferences. Alternatively, choosing to earn points by flight segments would continue to grant 500 points for a short leg, replicating the current baseline amount.

The new system offers three methods:

  • Distance-Based: Points based on actual miles flown.
  • Flight Segment-Based: 500 points per eligible flight segment under certain fare types.
  • Price-Based: Five points per eligible fare dollar spent, excluding taxes and fees.

Implications for Southeast Alaska Travelers

Many travelers in Southeast Alaska frequently take short flights connecting communities. According to an analysis by Nate Vallier of Alaska Travel Desk, these travelers could see a sharp decline in points if they do not switch to the flight segment method. For example, ten eligible Juneau-to-Sitka one-way flights would earn only around 940 points using the distance method, but 5,000 points via the segment option. Similarly, a round trip would accrue 188 distance-based points compared to 1,000 segment points.

Vallier recommends that passengers carefully assess their typical routes before selecting an earning method. Those who fly short distances often may benefit from choosing the segment-based system, while travelers who book longer flights or higher-priced tickets might realize more rewards through distance- or price-based earning.

Considerations for Travelers Outside Southeast Alaska

For those who frequently travel outside Southeast Alaska, price-based or distance-based methods may prove more lucrative. Under the price-based system, a flight booked for a $200 base fare would generate 1,000 points, potentially surpassing what short segments or distances would offer. For longer trips, such as Juneau to Seattle (approximately 950 miles), distance-based earning could provide more points than the flat segment rate.

Passengers booking Saver fares after June 11, 2026, for travel beginning August 1, 2026, should note that these lowest-priced tickets no longer earn Atmos Rewards points or status points, making eligibility and ticket type important considerations in any reward strategy.

Program Flexibility and Club 49

Members who do not actively choose one of the new earning options will default to distance-based earning. Alaska Airlines allows members to change their earning preference once per calendar year, applying the new method to future flights. New members joining in 2027 will be defaulted to price-based earning. The airline continues to offer the separate Club 49 program for Alaska residents, which remains unchanged and offers benefits like baggage allowances outside the Atmos Rewards earning structure.

Preparing for the Transition

With the new rules taking effect at the beginning of next year, Alaska Airlines encourages passengers to review their Atmos Rewards accounts and select the earning method that best matches their travel patterns. The company states these changes are designed to offer increased flexibility, especially as Alaska Airlines integrates its loyalty program with Hawaiian Airlines. Southeast flyers and all other Atmos Rewards members can log into their accounts to review their options and make changes ahead of their next journey.
