Invasion Season 3 unveils new villains, heroes, and heart-stopping action

It’s an unfortunate reality that you may have missed Invasion, which is surprising for a show on Apple TV+ with such a high-concept, cinematic premise. It has a die-hard following of viewers who get the slow-burn approach, but it’s never managed to find a real critical sweet spot, which may be at least partially due to its direct competition with two of Apple TV+’s other tentpole shows, Silo and Foundation, both of which have found more success with their respective audiences.

The creative ambition of Invasion has also been lackluster, if not outright uneven at times. Even its fans have occasionally lamented a love/hate relationship with the series.

As the Alien-Inspired Trailer Shows, Season 3 Will Be Intense and Dark

That said, there are a lot of great things about Invasion. For starters, the cinematography is beautiful, and the creative team, from director to the costume and set designers, has sought to make the series bold and thematically nuanced, if not always wholly successful. Apple TV+ has just released the official trailer for the third season, and it makes it seem like Invasion may finally be ready to lean into its true potential.

The series is created by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg, who is best known for directing multiple X-Men movies, as well as serving as a producer and writer on Oscar-nominated films like The Martian. The series’ basic premise has always been a fascinating one: An alien invasion, told from the perspectives of seemingly everyday people from all over the world. English, Japanese, and Pashto have all been incorporated to give a sense of both the scope of the show, while also rooting it in the views of real people.

Season 1 focused primarily on the early days of the incursion. The aliens and their mysterious agenda were almost tangential to the emotional drama of characters who were just trying to keep their heads above water amid the chaos and tragedy. The series made clear it wasn’t going to be a traditional alien invasion story, but it was frustrating for those who tuned in for an action-fueled alien blockbuster.

Season 1 ended with the full-scale alien invasion becoming a distinct and unavoidable possibility, and Season 2 doubled down on this, making things more intense and raising the stakes further still. The season had a different energy, as it played out the aftershocks of a completely altered world and the effects of the alien invasion on the few remaining characters. Humanity has been forced into small “safe zones,” and survival is now a daily struggle. It’s up to those who remain to salvage and rebuild, and in some cases, that has meant making unthinkable sacrifices. The pacing was still slow, but the narrative picked up speed, priming the series for Season 3.

Season 3 Will Feature Characters Uniting to Take on the Aliens in the Mothership

Season 3 is picking up two years later, and, as the official synopsis promises, the show will finally unite the characters from the disparate corners of the world who have been following separately for the past two seasons. Characters whom we haven’t seen interact include the show’s central leads. In Season 3, Aneesha Malik, Mitsuko Yamato, and Trevante Cole are coming together for a risky mission to board the alien mothership.

The third season also signals a turning point for the series in terms of its storytelling. While the first two seasons have highlighted how characters’ lives have played out independently, Season 3 will be where their arcs finally intersect for the first time.

The aliens have also reached the apex of their abilities, at least in this form, and have been sending out deadly tendrils to all corners of the Earth. The trailer hints at just how much they have evolved and how the risk to the remaining survivors has never been higher. The combined skills, knowledge, and resilience of every character will be necessary to even have a fighting chance to protect the rest of humanity, and as they prep for the mission, new alliances will be forged while old relationships may be put under incredible strain.

The returning cast members include Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik, Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato, Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole, India Brown as Jamila Hudson, Shane Zaza as the polarizing tech billionaire Nikhil Kapur, and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. Joining the main cast as a series regular is Erika Alexander.

It also has a real opportunity to answer a number of major long-running questions, while also giving viewers the higher-stakes alien action that they have wanted to see since the show’s beginning.

It’s still to be seen whether Invasion can shake up the naysayers, but the tenor of the trailer and the season overall point to a series that has been humbled, found its focus, and learned from past missteps. There are also reasons to believe that it will know how to effectively combine its earned emotional core with more ambitious set pieces, heightened stakes, and a sense of urgency that can bring a show into the must-see zone.

The third season of Invasion will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025.
