Exploring the Mentalics and Mind Control in Foundation
The Apple TV+ show Foundation has shared the official trailer for season 3. Announced last month, the latest installment of the high-budget, cinematic reboot of Isaac Asimov’s sci-fi classic will premiere on July 11, 2025, with weekly episodes until September 12. The latest trailer for Foundation season 3 introduces a fresh crisis, teases the dangers that threaten the galaxy, and announces the rise of one of Asimov’s most infamous villains, the ‘Mule.’
Mule Rising: What’s Happening in Foundation Season 3
Foundation is an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series of novels. The series began airing on Apple TV+ in 2021. The main character of the story is Gaal Dornick, who was first introduced in the second season of the TV show. Lee Pace, Mónica Castegnaro, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann star as the three imperial clones Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk. Season 2 showed Seldon’s plans and sacrifices to save humanity coming to fruition. But as the team learns to deal with victory, a major turning point is on the horizon, in which the Foundation will witness its empire growing. A war between the Foundation and the ruling Galactic Empire is approaching, and the Foundation has grown more aggressive, weaponizing religious zealotry to create a new religion in the name of galactic expansion.
On the other hand, the Second Foundation secretly houses the “Mentalics,” an isolated colony of people with powerful psionic abilities. Season 3 will move 152 years ahead of season 2 and introduce the story into a period in Asimov’s story called the Third Crisis. As per Apple TV+’s official synopsis for season 3, The Foundation is now much more entrenched and powerful than in its early years, and the once mighty Cleonic Dynasty is beginning to crumble, as the two rival powers find themselves cornered and under threat from all sides by the prospect of a common enemy that could unravel everything they have built: The Mule, a warlord with near-limitless military might and a terrifying new ability to control people’s minds.
The trailer for the third season starts with a narration by Hari Seldon’s voice: “Centuries ago, when we predicted the end of the galaxy, we built the Foundation to save humanity. But the darkness that was coming was always the point of turning.” “We’re out of time,” a character is heard as Gaal Dornick.
Foundation Season 3 Introduces ‘The Mule’ Antagonist
Foundation season 3 will introduce the main antagonist of the third story arc, ‘The Mule,’ a warlord who threatens to destroy everything the Empire and the Foundation have built up to this point. Pilou Asbæk, who has starred in high-profile series including The Night Manager and Luther, plays the Mule. “I can turn enemies into friends. Hate into love,” the actor’s character ominously states. “It only takes a little nudge.” Explosions, collisions, people screaming and fighting, and a city imploding in on itself give the audience a small but direct idea of how destructive the new threat could be.
The series will return with Jared Harris as Hari Seldon and Lou Llobell and Laura Birn as Gaal Dornick and Eto Demerzel, respectively. And season 3 will get an expanded cast to add to the extensive roster. The new cast members include Alexander Siddig as Dr. Ebling Mis, the ardent follower of Hari Seldon and self-taught psychohistorian; Troy Kotsur as Preem Palver, a leader of a planet of psychics; and Cherry Jones as Foundation ambassador Quent.
Additional casting announcements for the third season include Brandon P. Bell as Han Pritcher, Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern as Toran Mallow, Tómas Lemarquis as flamboyant designer Magnifico Giganticus, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing as Song, and Leo Bill as Mayor Indbur.
Galaxy’s Bleak Future
Foundation season 3’s Mule will pose a real threat to everyone in the galaxy. The real question about the Mule as an antagonist is, “How is he still alive?” We have no real idea of how he got his powers, but it is a distinct possibility that one of the many skills this antagonist can perform is the slowing down of time. That could explain how he is still alive; we are used to when someone else is killed by his abilities. Still, the Mule’s scope is so apocalyptic that his mere existence questions everyone’s way of life.
Asimov’s Foundation is about the concept of ‘psychohistory.’ The term ‘psychohistory’ is used to describe a fictional scientific discipline in Asimov’s Foundation universe that combines history, sociology, and mathematical statistics to make predictions, in particular, to predict the large-scale future of populations. However, season 3 of the Apple TV+ series is the first time it seems like that may not even hold up, for instance, Gaal’s simple utterance, “We’re out of time.” The trailer teases emotions running so high that even the Mule’s unprecedented physical power might not be able to control them.
When the show first started, everything had such a clean, clinical feel, but that changed in this trailer. There is emotion; there is rage and fear. The more interesting aspect of the trailer is that the foundations themselves could crumble. The battle with the Mule seems to change from a game of probabilities to the human drama of survival, with the stakes raised higher than ever before. The third season of the series will premiere on July 11 with weekly episodes.
