End of Juneau's 2026 Cruise Season Marked by Norwegian Encore
The 2026 juneau cruise season officially ended on Tuesday night when the Norwegian Encore departed the city at 10 p.m., leaving Juneau's downtown waterfront without another cruise ship scheduled until the following spring. This event marked the closing of a season defined by both new cruise capacity limits and an influx of nearly 1.7 million cruise passengers expected to have visited Alaska’s capital throughout the year.
Season Bookends: Vessels and Dates
The Norwegian Encore arrived at the A.J. Dock at 2:30 p.m. on its final day, noted as the last ship on the Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska 2026 calendar. The cruise season started on April 27 with the arrival of Holland America Line’s Eurodam, creating a 163-day window for cruise ship arrivals in the city. Compared to the previous year, which spanned from April 14 to October 14, the 2026 cruise season length was notably shorter by 21 days.
Impact of Cruise Capacity Limits and Passenger Volumes
The 2026 season was the first in which Juneau implemented daily cruise capacity limits for a full period. According to the agreement, berths were restricted to 16,000 passengers from Sunday through Friday, and 12,000 passengers on Saturdays, in an effort to control peak entry days rather than setting an annual cap. Previously, the city would see as many as 21,000 cruise passengers on peak days. The city had anticipated about 1.69 million alaska cruise visitors this season, following 1,712,600 passengers in 2025—a figure down roughly 1% from the 1.732 million recorded in 2024.
Operational Changes and Attractions
In addition to the capacity limits, downtown Juneau experienced the prolonged closure of the Goldbelt Tram. The tram stopped operating after an incident on April 30, when a tram car abruptly halted at the lower terminal. Two employees were hospitalized but later released. Though the aerial tram itself was shut for the entirety of the season, businesses and cultural activities at its lower terminal continued operations, providing some continuity for downtown visitor experiences.
Tourism Management and Community Perspectives
As the cruise season concludes, discussions around sustainable tourism management and cruise passenger volumes are expected to continue into the offseason. A city-commissioned tourism survey conducted in November 2025, prior to the introduction of lower-berth limits, revealed local concerns: 53% of respondents felt more should be done to manage tourism’s effects, 31% described these effects as positive for their household, 10% as negative, and 39% said they encountered both. The Visitor Industry Task Force has been extended through October, with further public testimony scheduled before the group finalizes its recommendations.
Future Outlook for Downtown Juneau Tourism
The downtown area now enters its winter lull, with cruise activities set to resume in spring 2027. According to the Cruise Line Agencies schedule, the next cruise ship arrival will be the Carnival Legend, expected at 7 a.m. on April 24, 2027. Until then, the cruise docks remain quiet following another active season of million-plus visitation.
